The assessment

Drooms is a German virtual data room provider founded in 2001, headquartered in Frankfurt with a parent company in Zug, Switzerland. It has a real London office and more than two decades of operating history, with particular depth in European real estate and asset lifecycle work alongside M&A.

It is one of only three providers on this table that publishes prices. The Starter tier is free forever at 150MB for two users, Professional is €49 per month, and Business is €398 per month, with annual billing discounts on both. The storage allowances are the thing to watch: they are small enough that a genuine diligence exercise will push you up a tier or two.

Its positioning is data sovereignty. Processing happens exclusively in the EU or Switzerland, and Drooms markets this explicitly against the reach of the US CLOUD Act. For a UK buyer that argument needs care, because since Brexit the UK is itself a third country to the EU, and Drooms publishes no UK-specific data protection language and offers no UK storage region.

Our verdict

Worth a look if you want published pricing, a free tier to test with, and European rather than American processing, and if EU rather than UK storage satisfies your requirement. Do the storage arithmetic before you sign: 150MB and 500MB entry allowances do not survive contact with a real document set. If someone has told you Drooms is the sovereign choice, be precise about whose sovereignty, because EU and Swiss processing is not a UK data residency answer.

Strengths

  • A genuinely free Starter tier at €0 with no credit card, which few dedicated data room providers offer
  • Strictly EU and Swiss processing, explicitly positioned against extraterritorial access under the US CLOUD Act
  • ISO/IEC 27001:2022, the current version of the standard
  • ISO/IEC 27018 for personal data in the cloud
  • More than twenty years of operation with a real London office

Limitations

  • No UK data residency, and no UK-specific GDPR language: post-Brexit the UK is a third country to the EU, so European sovereignty is not the same thing as UK compliance
  • No SOC 2 attestation of any type
  • No ISO 27701
  • Paid tier pricing is not reliably readable from their own pricing page: two readings returned materially different figures, so a quote is required in practice
  • Prices are in euros only, bringing currency and VAT friction for UK buyers
  • Entry tiers are very small at 150MB and 500MB, so real diligence volumes escalate to higher tiers quickly

Pricing, hosting and certification

Pricing

A free Starter tier at €0 per month is published and verified: 150MB, two user licences, three data room projects, no credit card required. Above that Drooms names a Professional tier, a Business tier and a custom Enterprise tier, with storage and user licences that scale within each. We do not publish figures for the paid tiers: two separate readings of their own pricing page returned materially different numbers, which indicates the page prices dynamically from a storage and user configurator rather than from a fixed list. Ask for a written quote. Euro denominated, with no sterling pricing published.

Data residency

What we could not confirm

Published openly, because a gap in the evidence is information too. Anything listed here could not be verified from a primary source, so we have not scored Drooms as though it were true.

  • The paid tier prices. Two separate readings of drooms.com/en/pricing returned materially different figures for the Professional and Business tiers, and one returned an implausible result showing both tiers at the same price. The page appears to price dynamically from a configurator. Only the €0 Starter tier is verified
  • Several Drooms facts were originally gathered through a text proxy because drooms.com refused direct requests, and should be re-verified against origin
  • Whether a time-limited trial exists alongside the free Starter tier
  • SOC 2 status
  • UK GDPR posture
  • Whether sterling pricing is available on request
