The assessment

Sterling Technology is a virtual data room provider whose EMEA headquarters is in London and whose lineage runs back to Sterling Financial Print, established in London in 1988. It launched its data room in the UK in 2010, demerged into a standalone company in 2018, and was acquired by the US language and technology group TransPerfect in 2022.

It is the strongest UK-native option on this table for conventional deal work. Clients can choose EU, UK or US hosting in separate environments, it claims Cyber Essentials Plus alongside ISO 27001 and SOC 1, 2 and 3 reports, and it states plainly that it is compliant with UK as well as EU GDPR. Support is 24/7/365 and, unusually, they commit publicly to never outsourcing it.

The reservations are commercial and structural. Nothing about price is published. And the UK sovereignty story has an asterisk: the company has been US-owned since 2022, so a buyer whose concern is US legal reach should ask about the group structure rather than stopping at the London address.

Our verdict

If your requirement is a proper M&A data room, hosted in the UK, from a supplier with Cyber Essentials Plus, this is the most direct answer on the table and the one to shortlist first. Two things to press on. Get the UK hosting option and the CE Plus certificate confirmed in writing, because both rest on a single page of their site. And if the reason you want UK hosting is exposure to US jurisdiction, ask how TransPerfect ownership affects that, because the London headquarters does not settle it.

UK presence, checked

EMEA headquarters at Aldgate House, 33 Aldgate High Street, London EC3N 1AH. Sterling Technology Limited, company number 11124057, incorporated 22 December 2017, and Sterling Technology Holdings Limited, 11054467, both at 5 Fleet Place, London EC4M 7RD.

Strengths

  • The only provider assessed that claims both Cyber Essentials Plus and an explicit customer choice of UK hosting
  • A genuine London EMEA headquarters with UK registered companies, rather than a sales address
  • 24/7/365 support that they state is in-house and never outsourced to third-party call centres
  • AI tooling for redaction, translation, gap analysis and document-level Q&A on their 2025 platform
  • Deep M&A and capital markets specialism with a lineage back to 1988

Limitations

  • No published pricing at all
  • Owned by TransPerfect, a US company, since 2022, which undercuts a pure UK sovereignty pitch
  • Premium, high-touch positioning that will price out smaller deals
  • The UK hosting option and the Cyber Essentials Plus claim appear on a single page of their site with no corroborating source

What we could not confirm

Published openly, because a gap in the evidence is information too. Anything listed here could not be verified from a primary source, so we have not scored Sterling Technology as though it were true.

  • The EU, UK and US hosting choice and the Cyber Essentials Plus claim appear on one page of their site only, with no second corroborating source
  • Named data centre locations
  • Any pricing figure
  • Cyber Essentials Plus is a self-declared claim. The IASME certificate register blocks automated lookup, so it has not been independently confirmed
